The main structures of this Bury L&B 0-4-0 loco and tender for Gauge 1 (10mm to 1ft scale) have been 3D printed each in one piece in sintered nylon, from David Viewing’s 3D CAD files. The unit is radio-controlled, and tender powered by a single cell Lipo battery. David built the rest of the train from etched brass parts made from his CAD designs. (David Viewing)

Soon after their introduction, the 2-2-0 ‘Planet’ and 2-2-2 ‘Patentee’ classes developed problems with broken crank axles which could not be made to be reliable with the available methods and materials of the time. This was a very serious problem for the Grand Junction Railway. William Buddicom became their locomotive superintendent early in 1840 and in due course saw to the introduction of the ‘Crewe Type’ 2-2-2 and 2-4-0 outside cylinder locomotives which of course had no crank axles. Large numbers were built for the GJR (later part of the LNWR) and for the Paris and Rouen Railway, which was closely connected with the GJR (in fact Buddicom moved to the P&R in 1841). The ‘Crewe Type’ is described in great detail in Loco Profile 15, Profile Publications Ltd, July 1971. The Caledonian also adopted the design enthusiastically and went on to develop it further.
